The Cross of Jesus Christ as a Christian symbol has been sanitized. Often we forget, the Cross was a Roman tourture device not simply to kill a man, but to make him suffer. Worse than the excruciating pain of the cross was the shame of the cross. They paraded Our Lord through the Via Dolorosa as a public spectacle. Our Lord takes our sin and shame upon His shoulders and He carries it up Calvary’s hill. Jesus calls us into His very life and saving act through an invitation to take our crosses and unite them to His. Sacrificial love is the currency to save souls.
